The SDSBVI has been educating students since 1900, and in Aberdeen since 1961. The existing campus and facility no longer meets the needs of the SDSVBI students due to its physical condition and design. The current facility has a large number of major deficiencies relating to current standards for education of students with visual impairments, and the physical condition of the current facility will soon require significant investment if not replaced.
The new school will improve accessibility and enhance the educational and training opportunities available for all students including expanded collaboration with NSU to train teachers of the visually impaired, helping to address a national shortage.
The new facility and campus will be built on the 3.5 acre site of Jerde Hall.
